Is there a big difference in picture quality between a Cannon L lense and an ordinary Cannon Lense?
Q. I'm a newbie in photography and would like to know which lense to buy for my Cannon XTi / 400D body. I'm debating between an ordinary EFS 17-55 lense with Image Stabilizer and a professional EF 24-70 L lense. This particular ordinary Cannon lense(17-55) is about 15% cheaper then the professional L lense (24-70). If the difference in image quality is negligable I will get the ordinary 17-55 lense because its lighter and has a wider field of view. But if there is a difference in the picture I will end up getting the L lense. I don't want to get the ordinary lense and end up getting the L lense at a later date because I've heard that once you see an image from an L lense it will be like an awakening or like a big wow when you see the… [cont.]

A. Yes definately. they are held to higher quality standards, the lens elements are made from higher quality materials.and the are more durable. The image quality is exceptional in zoom lenses where mos zooms tend to sacrifice at one end of the range or the other you will not find this with the Lseries lens. This does not mean that there may not be a bad one out there, but in general I have yet to see that. You will notice a obvious quality difference in the images from L and non L canon lenses. Spend the money. Remember even when you upgrade camera bodies you will have that lense to use with it, but be warned once you start with the L lenses you will be hooked.
